Currently I am using a Nikon D7000 and Nikon 300mm f4 AF-S as my primary bird shooting equipment. The Nikon 300mm f4 AF-S is a nice lens can produce a very sharp image with at f4. Even with a TC-14EII, it becomes a 420mm f5.6, the image IQ is still very good. Normally I use it with TC-14 on all the time. If I am going to shoot a further statistic bird, sometimes, I will switch it with TC-20EIII. The TC20 does auto focus on the 300mm but it is very slow. It is hard to use it to shoot BIF. I am highly recommend the beginner bird photographer to get a copy of this lens with TC14.
Here is produce by 300mm with TC20 with very heavy cropping. The bird is like 100 yards away from me. The photo is only 10% of the full picture.
